You may have more options than you think — and I'm here to help you find them.
Over the years, I've spoken with many Washington homeowners who were exploring a reverse mortgage primarily because of one thing: the rising cost of healthcare. Premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, prescription costs, and long-term care needs can put enormous pressure on a fixed retirement income.
Before tapping into your home equity, it's worth asking: are there programs that could reduce those healthcare costs directly — without a loan? In many cases, the answer is yes.
In addition to my work as a Reverse Mortgage Specialist, I am a licensed, independent Washington state health insurance agent (license number 1058182). Over the years I've helped many people navigate the complex landscape of Medicare, supplemental coverage, and healthcare cost assistance programs. That experience gives me a perspective that most mortgage professionals simply don't have.
My health insurance services are provided independently and are entirely separate from my mortgage work. Equity Smart Home Loans does not offer insurance services and is in no way affiliated with my insurance business.
There are a number of programs available to Washington residents that can significantly reduce healthcare expenses. These include:
Medicare Extra Help (Low Income Subsidy)
A federal program that helps people with limited income and resources pay for Medicare prescription drug costs, including premiums, deductibles, and copayments.
Washington Apple Health (Medicaid)
Washington's Medicaid program provides free or low-cost health coverage to eligible low-income adults, families, and seniors.
Medicare Savings Programs
State programs that help pay Medicare Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance for people with limited income.
Prescription Assistance Programs
Many pharmaceutical manufacturers offer patient assistance programs that provide medications at little or no cost to qualifying individuals.
Hospital Financial Assistance Programs
Most hospitals in Washington are required by law to offer financial assistance to patients who cannot afford their bills. These programs — sometimes called charity care — can reduce or even eliminate hospital bills for qualifying individuals, but you must ask and apply. Many people pay bills they never had to pay simply because they didn't know to request assistance.
Here's something most people don't realize: these programs are not automatic. You won't receive a letter in the mail telling you that you qualify. You have to know they exist, understand whether you're eligible, and take the steps to apply.
That's where many people fall through the cracks. They assume that if they were eligible for help, someone would have told them. Unfortunately, that's not how it works. Billions of dollars in available benefits go unclaimed every year simply because people didn't know to ask.
Connecting to even one of these programs can meaningfully reduce your monthly healthcare expenses — sometimes by hundreds of dollars. That's money that stays in your pocket without touching your home equity.
In my years as a health insurance agent in Washington, I've helped many people discover programs they didn't know existed and walk them through the application process. It's some of the most rewarding work I do.
I'm a person first and foremost. I got into this work because I genuinely like helping people — not just with mortgages, but with the bigger picture of financial security and peace of mind in retirement. If there's a way to help someone avoid a loan they don't need, I'd rather show them that path.
If you're facing high healthcare costs and wondering whether a reverse mortgage is your only option, I'd love to talk. I'm happy to walk you through your options to help manage your healthcare expenses at no cost to you! No obligation, no sales pitch — just a conversation about what resources might be available to you.
